Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Driver Understanding and Evaluation

Originating from a prominent self-driving car project started in 2009, the organization has deployed its autonomous driving technology across multiple vehicle platforms and use cases, accumulating over 100 million miles of real-world autonomous driving and extensive simulation experience across more than 15 U.S. states.

  • About the Opportunity:

The Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Driver Understanding and Evaluation is responsible for advancing machine learning models and systems that evaluate and enhance the behavior of autonomous vehicles. The role focuses on developing scalable machine learning solutions to improve data-driven evaluation metrics, automate workflows, and integrate human feedback to ensure the autonomous driving system operates safely and efficiently. This position contributes to the technical strategy and collaborates across multiple teams to align machine learning efforts with broader organizational objectives.

  • Responsibilities:
  • Lead development of advanced deep learning and machine learning models to support human-led triage and automate high-volume processes
  • Design and implement generative AI large language and vision models for behavior analysis and anomaly detection in autonomous driving
  • Monitor and incorporate industry best practices to develop reinforcement learning systems based on human preference data
  • Enhance user feedback analysis by developing tools for multi-label classification, sentiment analysis, comment summarization, root cause, and trend analysis
  • Oversee production and optimization of machine learning models assessing a large fleet of autonomous vehicles
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance within the team
  • Collaborate with product managers and technical program managers to define requirements and align technical goals with business objectives
  • Work closely with multiple technical teams and senior leadership to deliver strategic initiatives
  • Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Machine Learning, or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Over 7 years of hands-on experience in machine learning projects
  • Proficient coding skills in C++ and/or Python
  • Experience with foundational models, vision-language models, or deep learning
  • Familiarity with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Hugging Face transformers, including deployment of deep learning models at scale
  • Pay Range and Compensation Package:
  • Salary range: $238,000 to $302,000 USD, varying by location, experience, education, and skill level
  • Eligibility for discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and company benefits subject to requirements
