Virtual Transcriptionist / Captioner (Media)

Job Summary

  • UPWORK is seeking a detail-oriented and efficient Virtual Transcriptionist / Captioner (Media) to join our growing network of remote professionals. In this role, you will be responsible for converting audio and video recordings into accurate, well-formatted written transcripts and captions. You will work with a variety of media content, including interviews, podcasts, webinars, documentaries, and digital broadcasts. This position requires strong listening skills, fast and accurate typing, and familiarity with media formats and time-coding.
  • Key Responsibilities
  • * Listen to and accurately transcribe audio and video files into written documents.
  • * Create and synchronize captions or subtitles for media content.
  • * Edit and proofread transcripts to ensure high accuracy, grammar, and readability.
  • * Follow specific style guides, formatting requirements, and time-stamp conventions.
  • * Handle multiple projects simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines.
  • * Maintain confidentiality and securely handle client materials.
  • * Communicate effectively with clients or project managers regarding specifications and clarifications.
  • * Ensure proper tagging of speakers, background sounds, and other media elements as required.
  • Required Skills and Qualifications
  • * Excellent command of English (grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary).
  • * Strong listening and comprehension skills across diverse accents and audio qualities.
  • * Fast and accurate typing speed (minimum 60+ words per minute preferred).
  • * Experience using transcription tools such as Express Scribe, oTranscribe, or similar software.
  • * Basic understanding of captioning tools like Rev Captioner, Aegisub, or Subtitle Edit.
  • * Keen attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • * Reliable internet connection and a quiet workspace.
  • * Ability to manage time effectively and meet project deadlines.
  • Experience
  • * Entry-level to intermediate experience in transcription, captioning, or subtitling.
  • * Prior work on media-related projects (interviews, podcasts, or films) is a plus.
  • * Experience with Upwork or other freelance platforms is beneficial but not mandatory.
